With nearly 18 million U.S. employees, healthcare is the largest private-sector employer in the nation, yet the industry’s workforce has consistently been characterized by shortages, stress and burnout, according to a report from the National Center for Health Workforce Analysis (NCHWA).
As a result, many American patients are left without access to care, which can lead to worse outcomes and escalating costs. According to the report, in 2025, approximately 92 million people lived in a primary care Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) and 137 million lived in a mental health HPSA.
