Sarah G. Candler, MD, MPH, FACP is an Internal Medicine Physician, who specializes in primary care for high-risk older adults. She has dedicated both her practice and her leadership work to improving access to high quality, equitable, affordable primary care. Her professional goal is to recenter the American healthcare system on the patient-physician relationship through payment reforms, public transparency, and team-based care.
Dr. Candler has cared for patients in a range of practice models, leading systems-based projects to improve the ability of physicians and their teams to deliver high-quality care. A respected community-builder and strategic thinker, she has contributed to discussions with the leaders like the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). Within organized medicine, she has represented the American College of Physicians in local and national positions, including at the American Medical Association where she is Vice Chair of the Specialty and Services Society. Dr. Candler also serves her local government on the Standing Advisory Committee for DC’s Health Benefits Exchange.
As an expert communicator, Dr. Candler served as founding co-editor of Annals of Internal Medicine’s “Fresh Look” blog, on the Editorial Advisory Committee for Internal Medicine News, and as a frequent source for public-facing local and national media outlets.
After finishing her dual MD, MPH program at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Candler completed Internal Medicine residency in Tulane University’s Primary Care Track in New Orleans, Louisiana. She spent almost 10 years serving veterans and Medicare patients of Houston, Texas, before moving to Washington, D.C. where she now practices at CuraCapitol Primary Care.
