Social change expert and Georgetown Professor Leslie Crutchfield presented on how different social movements over the past decades have effected changes in Washington. Drawing from the push for marriage equality to Second Amendment advocates, Crutchfield noted the importance of an advocacy approach that combined grassroots, community-based advocacy paired with efforts on Capitol Hill and in Washington.
Crutchfield also emphasized the importance of finding non-traditional messages and channels to convey points to persuadable audiences and to begin to build an effective movement.
Following the presentation, PCC Board Member and American Academy of PA CEO Lisa Gables interviewed Crutchfield about her research, diving deeper into what lessons could be applied to the push for primary care. Crutchfield emphasized that community voices would need to play an important role and encouraged PCC and its members to focus on building a broader movement drawing more examples from across the nation.
