PCPs are stepping up as the “de facto” mental health care providers in their communities. Amid a widespread shortage of mental health care, they wrote as many as 79% of prescriptions for depression and manage an estimated 60% of the total psychiatric cases (plus one third of severe persistent mental illness cases), sending only the most severe on to psychiatry.
